This is your invitation to join in our virtual meeting this upcoming Saturday, April 4, 2020, at 4pm (to 6pm) to discuss Chapter 1 of Capital Vol. I by a man that needs no introductions – Mr. Karl Marx.
I know what you are gonna say. “That is simply bananas. You think I can read Chapter 1 (plus a pithy introduction from David Harvey – see attached) in a week?!”
The jury is still out on that one, honestly, but know that you are most welcome and amongst comrades. And no questions are too big or too small! But note: we do our best to keep to the readings at hand so that all can participate and feel “in the loop.”
The BookMarx group is utilizing this version of the book; if you have a different translation that is charmingly dog-eared from previous perusals or one that is collecting dust, feel free to use what is available.
As to the reading itself, pay particular attention to the ways Marx uses the word “value” (with or without a modifying adjective) throughout the text. You will come to find that it does not have a singular definition. Also, if you can, don’t skip the footnotes – Karl often hides a boatload of snark in those blurbs. Finally, were we to hold this meeting in person, we would have likely jaunted to a nearby watering hole for general conviviality. Presuming the Zoom account does not have another on its dance card, there may be time for a digital happy hour afterwards.
