Madison Area DSA endorses the “Doyle Resolution”

Madison Area DSA endorses the “Doyle Resolution” in support of the renewed effort to halt the expansion of the Dane County Jail. Click here to sign up for Madison DSA’s efforts to stop the jail.

In 2019 the Dane County Board of Supervisors flaunted the Derail the Jail coalition and approved a $220 million jail consolidation project, the largest capital project in the history of Dane County. Only four supervisors voted against the expansion, despite the well-documented racial injustices that pervade the communities of Dane County and how sorely apparent they are in our systems of incarceration. People who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are disproportionately separated from their families and communities and locked away in the Dane County Jail. The new jail would stand as a monument to the gross racial disparities of our community as much as it would be a substantial commitment to sustaining white supremacy and police power in Dane County.

We have always known it’s possible to reduce the incarcerated population of Dane County. The criminal justice system’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has proven this fact to our community. There are real, immediate actions that can be taken to work towards ending incarceration as a practice in our community. Madison Area DSA calls on the Dane County Board of Supervisors, Dane County Executive Joe Parisi, and the criminal justice system of Dane County to support the Doyle Resolution to immediately halt the jail expansion project. We further call on our government to invest that $220 million into community-controlled safety, health, and social welfare projects.

We encourage you to take the following actions to support the Doyle Resolution:

Some short email templates are available if you absolutely do not have the time to write your own messages, but their impact drops off a steep cliff once supervisors and other representatives start seeing the same letters over and over again. The Electoral Politics Working Group has published a How to Write Your Reps guide that will help you personalize your messages and maximize your effectiveness in pushing for police abolition in Dane County!
